Hi Game Plan Parents,
As parents, watching your student-athlete navigate the ups and downs of their sport can be both inspiring and heart-wrenching. Whether it’s handling the pressure of competition, recovering from an injury, or managing setbacks, mental toughness is a skill that every athlete needs to develop—and they’ll need your support along the way.
Here are some strategies to help your athlete build and maintain mental resilience:
Encourage a Growth Mindset
Remind them that setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow. Celebrate their effort, not just their wins, and help them see challenges as stepping stones to success.
Promote Self-Care
Stress the importance of rest, good nutrition, and taking breaks when needed. A healthy body leads to a strong mind.
Be a Safe Space
Let them know they can share their fears and frustrations with you without judgment. Listening without offering immediate solutions can make a big difference.
Focus on the Process
Help them shift their mindset from outcomes to effort. Reinforce the value of hard work, discipline, and persistence, regardless of the score.
Teach Stress-Management Techniques
Share breathing exercises, meditation apps, or simple ways to calm their mind during high-pressure moments.
Have you helped your athlete through a tough time in their sport? What worked for your family? Let’s exchange ideas and support each other as we navigate this journey together.
